Converting biomass to energy: A guide to developers and investors

Washington, DC

Businesses in many developing countries and emerging economies often has to operate in an environment where energy is unreliable and expensive. Enhancing access to power is a key priority for the IFC and biomass is an area of growing global importance. According to the 2009 Energy Balance of the World by EIA, biomass covers approximately 10 percent of the global energy supply. In particular, biomass is a direct source for industrial energy and heating needs. The production of biogas from landfills and many agricultural enterprises provides the great potential of producing heat, electrical power, and even fuel on a predominately climate-neutral basis. It can also be a solution to manage environmental problems in a sustainable manner. The overall objective of the study is to develop a white paper that would help build capacity among key stakeholders, as biomass continues to grow into and become a more important contributor to meet the energy needs in emerging countries. Solving the mobility challenge

Bratislava, Slovakia

How can Bratislava develop a sustainable mobility system? Bratislava has been recently affected by profound mobility challenges. Traffic jams are very evident, there is lack of parking places, cycling infrastructure is under-developed and under-financed, city mobility policy is ineffective, there are challenges in terms of public transportation, some of the proposed solutions - like the establishment of a new highway ring around the city - seem to be overpriced. Odviati (www.odviati.sk) and Solved intend to start defining the challenge in a wider scale. Then invite the experts within the Odviati and Solved communities, so we will start systematically tackling the challenge by bringing together experts in Slovakia and abroad (the focus group is Slovak expats abroad, however, we are very open to receive ideas from international experts as well). The project timeline is month November, the results of the project will be presented at a dedicated event in December. We plan to invite a top international expert in the area of mobility and so present the sustainable mobility system, demonstrate our results and initiate a wider debate on solving the challenge. Increasing wood biomass supply for bioenergy and wooden products

Belgrade, Serbia

Serbian forests are recognized as significant source of woody biomass. However, the annual harvest in Serbia represents less than 70% of calculated harvests and much of woody biomass from forests remains unused. The share of forest area in Serbia is close to 50 % owned by private persons, and the rest is state owned or owned by parishes. Traditionally, the state forests have organized and centralized forest management, but regarding management of private forests there are very few local organizations and human resources responsible for implementation of forest policy measures and promotion of sustainable management. Furthermore, especially private forest owners have lack of knowledge and capacities for forest management, wood work organization, and wood sale. In addition, private forest owners have a lack of extension services providers, which will provide them with needed services related to their forest holdings. All of those lead to a consequence of not realizing the full potentials of private forests in terms of yield, and reducing the amount of wood products and wood biomass which can potentially be supplied. Project objectives are briefly: - to increase the role of private forest owners in sustainable management, reforestation and wood biomass harvesting from forests - to strengthen private forest owners knowledge and capacities for forest work, wood production and safety measures in forestry - to promote establishment of energy wood plantations on private forests and low quality agricultural land - to improve forest owners awareness of wood biomass products, sale and market - to support capacities of forest owners for business startups in wood biomass production and processing In concordance with project objectives following activities can be proposed: - Organization of trainings for private forest owners on private forest owners’ organizations and forest management and management planning - Promotion of forestation and establishment of energy wood plantations - Provision of training on wood biomass products, sale and market - Provision of training for business planning and startup development in woody biomass - Provision of best practice examples of private forest owners’ organizations, energy wood plantations, and woody biomass processing and products and woody biomass related business organization in various regions and neighboring countries

Devínska Ekobyla

Devinska Kobyla, Slovakia

Devinska kobyla is the highest hill in Bratislava. It was designated as a military base with anti-air missiles / potentially nuclear warheads. Today the whole area, is in fact part of national natural reservation and also Natura 2000, is abandoned, neglected and resembling a post apocalyptic era. In fact, the whole area is a predestined location for creating a new experience with nature, providing amenities for tourism, free time, ecological farming, recreation, beautiful views, educational activities, etc. It has all parameters to become a top destination within the city of Bratislava, due to its proximity, location, accessibility by quality infrastructure and existing stock of buildings (already in poor condition). Part of the land and area is owned by the city of Bratislava. Rest of the area has no clear ownership structure. This project will be introduced to the city as a potential local smart city demonstration / testbed project.

S&C Partner Network

Helsinki Metropolitan, Finland

Helsinki Metropolitan Smart & Clean Foundation is a step change project to drive the change towards a more sustainable and prosperous future. The change is made in cities, which are platforms for new solutions. New technologies and services are tested in different areas and across the region. The best ones will be exported and will create thriving businesses. By 2021, the Helsinki region and Lahti will be the best test bed in the world and a showcase for the best solutions and services of Finnish and international companies. These show how smart solutions, digitalization and circular economy create opportunities to reduce emissions, make everyday living easier and create a thriving living environment in the city covering energy, mobility, built environment and water and waste sectors. The S&C Partner Network supports the Smart & Clean community’s communications and makes the Helsinki region attractive to investors and experts from all around the world. It also guides and supports individual project dialogues and disseminates information about the ongoing or achieved changes locally, nationwide and around the globe. Smart & Clean facilitates co-creation and activates the entire S&C community. Companies, cities, research organisations and the state are cooperating closely to make the Helsinki Metropolitan Area the best test bed in the world for smart and clean solutions. The cities are committed to boosting Smart & Clean by offering businesses a test bed, on which companies can test and design new solutions, concepts and services. Smart & Clean has set criteria to steer its work. Smart & Clean changes must improve the quality of life of citizens, reduce emissions and waste and/or improve resource efficiency. Several parties have to work on the projects across city and sector boundaries covering both private and public sectors. The changes will have to create new business and references for companies. This means they have to be internationally interesting. S&C does not manage small projects or individual pilots and does not directly support individual company. Neither do we act as project managers, but the project lead will remain with one partner, such as a city or company. In general, S&C is also not a project funding organization, but rather an accelerator. S&C enhances brand management through references, but does not function as traditional trade promotion organisation. S&C Stormwater Quality Management

S&C Stormwater Quality Management project aims to develop top class solutions for stormwater monitoring and quality management in urban environment. Join this project to mitigate the impact of extreme weather conditions to citizens’ everyday lives! Projektissa muodostetut yritysten ekosysteemit tarjoavat kaupungeille kokonaisratkaisuja, joita yliopistot tukevat tutkimuksella. Referenssiympäristöissä syntyvä tieto jaetaan avoimesti digitaalisella alustalla. All stromwater management technology providers are welcome to offer their solutions and services to S&C Stormwater Quality Management project. Let’s build together a world class test environment! Stay tuned for project events organised during 2017-2018.
