The Finnish alpine sports community is turning winter sports into a driver of sustainable development. Levi Ski Resort and Nasdaq are joining the White Winters program, which is launched by the alpine sports umbrella organization Ski Sport Finland and the expert community Solved. White Winters unites World Cup event organizers, venues, and companies to solve sustainability challenges in winter sports in a practical way.

“Joining the White Winters program offers us a unique opportunity to position ourselves as a global leader in snow security and sustainable development for ski resorts. Levi Ski Resort’s founding partnership in the program serves as a 20th-anniversary gift to the global alpine skiing community – a strong statement that Levi Ski Resort is committed to doing everything it can to preserve white winters for future generations,” says Marko Mustonen, Levi Ski Resort’s Commercial Director.

The goal is to make winter sports more sustainable and, in doing so, more popular. This will benefit athletes, event organizers, sports federations, and tourist destinations, as well as the commercial partners involved in the sport.

Nasdaq is committed to promoting sustainable economic growth, tackling climate change, and implementing concrete actions to address sustainability challenges.

“We are dedicated to advancing sustainable development through the companies listed on Nasdaq. The White Winters program offers an excellent opportunity for collaboration that not only promotes the sustainability of winter sports but also brings together various stakeholders – companies, event organizers, athletes, and destinations – to create concrete environmental solutions with long-term impact that can be scaled to other areas,” says Erja Retzén, Senior Managing Director at Nasdaq Nordic.

The primary sources of emissions in winter sports are travel, infrastructure, and consumer behavior. It’s essential to find more sustainable solutions in these areas.

“Events, from World Cups to regional competitions, can act as sparks for change. By setting an example and demanding real action from different actors, event organizers and venues can initiate impactful change and, by doing this, act as champions of sustainable development in alpine sports,” explains Santtu Hulkkonen, Director of the White Winters program at Solved.

The White Winters panel discussion will be held at the Gondola Restaurant on Friday at 1:00 PM.

“The White Winters event, held alongside the Levi World Cup on November 15, is an excellent example of how different players can come together to address sustainability challenges. In addition to Levi Ski Resort and Nasdaq, White Winters partners Betolar, Snow Secure, Honkatalot, and Jäspi are also participating. The panel discussion will include FIS’s Sustainability Director, Susanna Sieff,” says Janne Leskinen, CEO of Ski Sport Finland and Secretary General of the Levi World Cup.

The White Winters program is part of the International Ski Federation (FIS)’s sustainability strategy, which aims to develop more sustainable winter sports through collaboration with national sports federations and event organizers.

“Such collaborative projects deliver concrete solutions that can be applied in other locations and events,” adds Janne Leskinen.
