Dissolving pulp for the textile industry – sustainable clothing from viscosis

Did you know what viscosis is made out of?  Many people do not.

Stora Enso, Enocell mill Joensuu factory produces fibres for textile industry through dissolving pulp from birch. Stora Enso´s product represents a traceable source of raw material with a very low environmental impact over other sources in the industry.

Viscosis has significantly lower water requirement compared to cotton production. For example cotton production consumes 11 700l of water / 1kg of cotton.  Viscosis clearly has a sustainable advantage over polyester and a lower land requirement over wool production as well. Also in cotton production, massive amounts of fertilizers and pesticides are used. In addition to that 90% from cotton is genetically manipulated. Viscosis production is cleantech and sustainable.

From sustainability perspective viscosis is over the top, but other characteristics in viscosis are also great. It has fantastic absorbing capacity, also comfortable and delicate feel to it makes it very nice to wear.  Rayon is one of the most popular uses of viscose and is used to make many items for example tablecloths and bed linens.
